Airlines are people too

June 16, 2008

Reuters, UK reported on Friday that airlines are also being affected by high oil prices. DUH! What they call “skyrocketing fuel costs” is severly affecting the way airlines are doing business. You may have noticed recently that many carriers are starting to use add on costs for increase their ticket prices. Extra charges for one bag, more for two bags, airport fees and the like are becoming more and more common. Here’s why.

…As expensive and uncomfortable as air travel may be for passengers, the pain is worse for airlines, as fuel costs approach 40 percent of a ticket price — even after two years of fare hikes.

It’s getting tough for carriers struggling to run the leanest possible operations to persuade people to pay more money for their cramped, crowded and frequently delayed flights.

“This situation — skyrocketing fuel costs — has gone from a serious cost problem a year ago into one that is going to completely torpedo the way airlines do business,” said Michael Boyd, airline consultant at The Boyd Group…

Remember the old days when you wanted to buy a car for an advertised price, then the salesman asked, “do you want tires?” or “do you want an engine?”. As if anyone could travel any great distance without at least one checked bag!

Bottom line is this; because of our failed energy policies of both Republicans and Democrats (both in the white house and in congress) thanks to pressure from environmentalists who have hijacked our nation and made it nearly impossible to develop our own energy if it involves petroleum. To my knowledge, no airlines have yet to convert jets to windmills or solar energy, and if they do, God forbid if it gets cloudy!

In summary, we need to start drilling here, drilling now and drive down prices!
