Can We Defeat The Health Care Bill? – OPINION

March 10, 2010

I was standing in line at the Mill Valley Post Office, and the woman behind me started complaining about the service and how slowly the line was moving. Then she launched into a tirade about how they are ending Saturday delivery. In her opinion, a bankrupt government should raise taxes even higher in order to pay for services such as the Post Office. She was outraged.

Of course, I could not help myself and asked. “Can you imagine what it will be like if government gets hold of our health care? Think of the lines.” Silence.

Then like a hurricane this woman, who I can now only describe as a frothing liberal, launched into how much she has had to spend on her dear mother’s health care costs ($350,000 last year) and how it would be fixed if health care was passed. I can only imagine this woman’s mother is in her 80′s because she herself was at least my age or a little older. Of course, by then I was called to the counter and could not continue the discussion.

On the way to doing other errands, my mind was racing with what I should have or could have said to make my point.

  • If Obamacare passes, your mother would probably be denied treatment to extend her life. It would just be too costly. Obama would say, “Giver her the pain pill.”
  • How much should you pay for your mother’s health care? (My guess is nothing.)
  • Why should I or the other people in the Post Office be forced to pay your mother’s health care bill through higher taxes? For that fact, why should our MCF members have to pay your mom’s debts? Just because it is a nameless, faceless bureaucrat cutting the check and sending it to your mother’s doctor, doesn’t mean it is not coming from someone else’s paycheck. And if you’re paying mine, and I’m paying yours, how does that make health care cheaper????
  • Because of the way it is set up, costs will quickly outpace tax revenue, so how will we as a country pay for this health care monstrosity when we are already over $12 trillion in debt? Where will the money come from?
  • Another false assumption by you liberals is that once health care is passed, your services will remain as good as they are now. They will just be free!
  • And if we raise taxes even higher to pay for health care, what will happen to unemployment? Businesses will not be able to keep the people who produce goods and services which Americans will no longer be able to afford because they have no jobs! Where will the tax revenue come from if a large portion of the working force is on unemployment? If you are a student of economics (and truth) like I am, you can quickly understand why the country is heading in the wrong direction.
  • Can’t you people see where we are now versus 4 years ago and how bad it has gotten after just one year? If we keep going this direction it can only get worse. Only the truly blind and obedient to Obama still think it’s better now than under Bush. God help you.

Of course, I never got to say any of these things to the woman. Once again, I was left talking to myself. I really don’t think people understand the economic impossibility of the Obamacare plan, and, what’s even scarier, neither do our politicians. The numbers don’t work. All we need to do is look at Medicare and Medicaid, and we can see that if suddenly everyone is covered in this type of plan, it will collapse. Why else would they need a 4-6 years head start of revenue (taxes) before the 4 years of medical insurance benefits kick in on this 10 year plan in order to get a good Congressional Budget Office scoring? 10 years of tax receipts to pay for 4-6 years of benefits. It will be bankrupt in the 11th year, and by then it will be too late to reverse it.

For months we have been talking about the unintended (or are they?) consequences of anything the government gets its hands on. First of all, once the health care benefits kick in it will be impossible to get rid of this entitlement. Our only chance will be to repeal it (if we can) after the tax portion is implemented and before the benefits start. Some people will squeal like the woman in the Post Office, but people like her will never support our position anyway. We have to forget about trying to convince them and work on the people who understand the laws of economics, which seems to be the majority of the country. Additionally, we need to elect public servants who answer to their constituents and understand they can not spend money we don’t have.

Had Social Security been left in a trust fund as was promised so that it could earn interest, there might be some proceeds over and above the original contributions. However, it was not kept out of the hands of our politicians. Instead it was confiscated, thrown into the general fund and spent. In fact, the Social Security Trust Fund has been spent many times over long ago.

So will it be with a Health Care Trust Fund. No matter what they say, the next group of politicians will not be beholden to the promises of the previous politicians. Look at how our Constitution has been betrayed and you can see the truth in what I am saying. We need politicians with character, ones who will stand up for what is right and not for what is convenient. We need people with the attitude that we must do what is good for America, not what’s good for their career.

All we can hope is that reasonable House Democrats hold out for the good of the country. Republicans are not to blame as they do not have the votes to stop this… right now. Come November, 2010 it will be a different story, and that is why they are rushing to get it done before Easter.
